How does a gas lighter gets a voltage of 800 V to make a spark?
If you observe a cigar lighter or a gas lighter, you can see spark when you press the button on that.
Here the the spark is due to a potential difference of 800 V approximately !. So the question is, how is it possible even without a power supply.
The answer is piezo ignition.
In those lighters there is a piezo igniter which causes voltage of 800 V. The principle is piezo electricity. There is a quartz crystal in each igniter, which is a piezo electric material. So when we press the button, a sudden force is applied to the quartz, due to the sudden force high voltage in the range of 800 V is generated in the quarts crystal(due to piezo electric effect), this voltage is used to make the spark .
Piezo electric effect : When a mechanical stress is applied to a piezo electric material, voltage will be induced across the other faces of the material.
But this 800 V will not get an electric shock, because the current that can supplied by this 800 v is very less.
